TheTypes of Black Single Motherhood
(book excerpt)
The End Started With a Beginning…
In writing my final chapter – I realized that after speaking to so many black mothers – I have come to understand that there are many levels of black single motherhood…
The Traditional Single Black Mother – It’s just her and her children, there are no men living in her home, single income home. Family and support systems are sparse.
The Married Black single Mother – Yes, She is married right up to the second knuckle in carats & begets. Husband/Dad is always working several jobs and has a side hustle as well. Married Black Single Mother has been ascribed to taking care of the kids; after all, hubby is making the cheese. The thing to keep in mind here is society sees this black mother alone and immediately labels her as the ‘traditional black single mother.’ This labeling of her and her children comes with negative stigmas and assumptions. The working spouse/father is viewed as the absentee father.
The Part-Time Black Single Mother- Yes, she exists; she has custody of her black son for six months of the year. Imagine how challenging it is for her to assert any kind of authority anywhere. The other Part-Time Black Single Mother is doing her mother responsibilities in-between boyfriends. A new dating prospect cannot know right away that she has kids. One minute this mother is around, the next minute she is gone with the new boyfriend; leaving the black son in the care of whomever. Imagine the instability in this young child’s mind and life.
The Long Term Relationship Single Black Mother – She is with the father of her son, but they are not married. This aspect of her relationship could impact her black son in society. The father really has to be a strong, constant presence in the black son’s life.
If any of these women describe you and your black son – please read this book and write in the margins – take ownership of the contents of my book and be ready to change –Be ready to raise your black son into a king.
*** Let's not forget - the second time around single mother - the aunt, or grandmother who is now taking care of a child of a family member.
